Waking up was something of a violent affair, with Shouji turning over in his bed and coughing violently, as if to get the blood and seawater and detritus out of his lungs. He sags with his weight supported on his elbows, sucking in deep, ragged breaths with tears streaming down his face at the discomfort. His body aches, though the crushed ribs are decidedly intact again.
A groan accompanies the way that he sinks back down again to rest with his head pushed into his pillow, and a hand creeps out to find his phone just to check the time, though the sun coming in from the windows would make it obvious that it's still early in the morning (6 am to be precise). He hasn't even processed that he can smell food, but spotting movement from the corner of his eyes draws his attention around, and he stares straight at the figure of the purple-haired hero that had clearly been waiting for him to wake up again. His weight gets pushed up on another set of hands, though his arms tremble subtly in trying to hold him up.
He's still in that white uniform, now blood-stained and stiff with sea salt, and his mask is nowhere to be seen.
Shinsou had brought the food he made with Max, telling the man he had enough to deliver and that Shinsou could take this one. He'd gotten a weird smile from the older guy but in the end just waved it off as Max being...Max.
"Shouji!" He jumps a bit when he hears the other cough and sets the tray of food aside before moving to help the other sit up. "Hey, welcome back. Sorry about the mask...I didn't know where yours was and I didn't wanna go digging through your stuff. Take your time..."
Shifting Shinsou moved to perch himself on the edge of the bed, watching the other. "When you're ready I have breakfast. Tamagoyaki, fish, rice...just like back home."
Shouji nearly flinches at the touch as he inspects himself, his hands running over his body just to be sure that he really is intact and not about to keel over in Shinsou's lap. He manages to force his breathing into evening out and wipes his hand across his mouth.
"...thank you," he says after a good few seconds of silence, clearly bemused. "Would you please...excuse me for a moment?"
He waits until Shinsou gives him a bit of space, then dips into the bureau that represents the sum total of the furnishings that he'd kept in his space. A change of clothes, and that familiar blue-green mask disappear with him into the en suite bathroom, where the water would run in the sink for a long while. By the time he reappears, dressed comfortably in jogging pants and tanktop and mask around his neck, the food has gone lukewarm.
It wouldn't stop him from sitting down to eat, but there's an order of priorities that he hadn't anticipated, and trying to clean up was at the top of the list.
When Shouji left to get dressed, Shinsou sat and waited. Fiddling a bit with the hem of his shirt he thought about his conversation with Max and about how he shouldn't feel as guilty as he had. After all, Max was right. There had to be those there to help the 'heroes' right? It was something that had come up even back home, he could vaguely remember Uraraka mentioning something like that and now here was someone not of their world echoing her sentiment.
It had actually helped more than he wanted to admit.
Hearing the door to the little bathroom open again, Shinsou tried to keep himself looking more neutral. Not really smiling but at the very least he wasn't scowling or letting his own troubles show too much.
"Dedue helped me get you back here...you sort of...well you showed up in Sundries." More like crashed into the place. "I-I covered your face as best as I could when he and another lady were here but...I kinda had to use my scarf. Didn't think you'd like waking up tangled up in it." He tried to joke. "Oh and uh...sorry if they eggs aren't quite right, they don't have the right sort of pan."
Definitely not as perfectly shaped and at least one layer was a little over cooked but all in all they weren't bad.
Shouji, of course, holds absolutely no resentment over other people opting to stay. After all, just as Max, and Uraraka, and others had all said, it was necessary to have people ship-side just the same way it was necessary to have other heroes on standby to help victims, and offer support to those on the front lines. More than that, it was a comfort to have people that cared to come back to. He's glad that Shinsou was here.
Settled down with his plate on his crossed legs and the bowl of rice within easy reach, Shouji eats using one of those peripheral mouths, and the comfort of being able to do so is obvious in his posture. He's tired on more than just a physical level, and nearly debating on either crawling back into bed, or going and occupying the swimming pool for a while just to do something low-impact where he might have some quiet time to himself to sort through his thoughts in the wake of the slow death he'd experienced.
He slows down in his eating and his eyes widen subtly at the information that Shinsou had done that for him. Trying to preserve his privacy even as a corpse speaks volumes of the other's character.
The comment about the eggs is what makes him actually speak up again though. It's such a mundane little thing to be worried about, and it makes him momentarily forget the gravity of everything else.
"I noticed they're not exactly equipped for the kinds of things that we might have normally had. Max had to improvise an insulated pan for me when he found me trying to bake something." Something that he would have shared if it had turned out the way he'd wanted it to...
If Shouji had mentioned being grateful for Shinsou making sure to cover his face, the other would have just waved it off. Not to be ungrateful for Shouji's thanks but more because he personally didn't see a need for it. Shouji hadn't gone around telling others about Shinsou's quirk and it felt the same for Shinsou.
"Heh, yeah he mentioned he met you trying to bake." Leaning a bit to rest back on his hands now that they could both just sit on the bed. "I didn't know you baked, I thought only Sato did that sort of thing."
"I'm not very good at it," he replies quietly, regarding his breakfast between bites rather than looking back at Shinsou. He doesn't know how much he should really say about it, given the other was a lot more likely to understand just based on the context of the time and place they're coming from.
But then again...what's the harm in explaining?
"Before I started at UA my mother wanted to make sure that I could feed myself if I had to. She taught me some simple meals, a kasutera for dessert, bread so that no matter what, I'd have something. I asked Sato to teach me a little but he got so technical and tried to make it all perfect, and that just...isn't something I can do."
"Makes sense," Shinsou nodded, listening a bit with a small smile as the other talked about his mother teaching him and their classmate. "Sometimes we just gotta leave all that sort of stuff to the ones passionate about it, right?"
Reaching up to tug on a bit of his own hair idly, Shinsou shrugged. "I know how to cook breakfast and I can follow instructions...other than that I'm better at making all kinds of coffee drinks. Used to hate the taste when I was younger so I tried to make it taste better."
Times like this, Shouji is glad that he can eat and hold a conversation at the same time without being rude. He's finding that he likes talking to Shinsou, even if it's after something so grim.
"I've never really been a fan of having a lot of stuff in my coffee, but I don't drink it very often anyway. I might say that maybe you should cut back a little, you already look like you don't get enough sleep," he points out, tone concerned rather than the teasing that might be expected from a comment like that.
The teasing does bring a small smile to Shinsou's lips.
"Would you suggest Aizawa-sensei not drink his coffee too? Come on, we need the caffeine to put up with you lot. Or to put up with either hero course really." He teases back, it's so obvious that he doesn't just 'put up' with the hero course kids. He wants to be one of them, so very badly. He just also really needs sleep and doesn't get it so...caffeine.
"Personally, I would suggest that he actually let himself rest every now and then. He already deals with all of us and I'm sure he chugs as much coffee as his body can stand to do it. It can't be good for him." He would never voice such opinions to the man himself, not when questioning your elders is so deeply frowned upon and he already knows that he owes Aizawa, and really all of the staff at the school, everything.
But he can still poke at Shinsou. "But you're not him, and we have other things to deal with here. I know sleeping here is hard to get used to but I'm pretty sure powering through and caffienating isn't the best answer."
